2011
Southern Lights Dance Company

In 2011, Southern Lights Dance Company in association with STAMP at THE EDGE presents a stunning triple bill featuring new work from Maria Dabrowska and German choreographer Riki Von Falken and Fleur de Thier’s elegant re-worked piece Perch.

Widely acclaimed at the Body Festival in 2009, this vibrant young contemporary company makes its premier in Auckland with a diverse programme of dynamic work.

Berlin dancer and choreographer Riki von Falken began her professional career in 1981. Funded by Berlin's Department for Cultural Affairs, she expanded her dance studies in New York and, since 1988, has concentrated wholly on choreography and teaching. She has created an extensive repertoire of solo and group dance work, her most recent, The Geometry of Separation, premiered in May 2009 at Radialsystem V in Berlin.

Maria Dabrowska is one of New Zealand’s most versatile freelance dancer/choreographers. A founding member of the Graduate Dance Company, she has created and toured many shows and worked with some of New Zealand’s best known companies. Maria has won numerous awards for her work including the 2006 Fringe Best Theatre Award and The Best of the Fringe Award. In 2007 she received Honourable Mentions for Best Dance Show and Stand Out Fringe performer for Chance, and Stand Out Performer of the 2008 New Zealand Fringe Festival. In 2009, Maria created Carnival Hound at The Print Factory in Wellington, performed in the internationally acclaimed World of Wearable Arts, choreographed on Footnote’s Forte season and performed with Vospertron in New Delhi, India.

Christchurch based choreographer, Fleur de Thier danced for several well known choreographers before setting up Christchurch company, Scrambled Legs. She has received numerous grants to create and tour work and is a founding member of Jolt Dance Company and Rebound Dance Company. Fleur created Winded for the 2009 Christchurch Arts Festival and has been commissioned to present her new work Tilt for the 2011 Festival. Perch premiered at the 2009 Body Festival and has been revisited for this year’s Tempo Dance Festival.

Featuring the outstanding talent of dancers Hannah Tasker Poland, Julia Milsom, Erica Viedma, Aleasha Seaward and Andrew Miller, this promises to be an inspiring night of dance.

This dance material is a most sophisticated evening; perhaps the most sophisticated evening of contemporary dance produced in this country in the last few years?
