Acclaimed New Zealand choreographer Ann Dewey presents her highly anticipated new work, Shine Lady. Bringing to life the striking images of female divinity from Pavarti to the Madonna, Shine Lady is a delightfully rich exploration of the cycles of human life, full of strange surprises, humour and pathos. Dancers Liz Kirk, Liana Yew and Julie van Renen create an ‘other world’ experience which entrances and inspires the audience.
From high energy to beautifully crafted, more ritualistic sections, Shine Lady maintains a vibrant and compelling momentum from beginning to end. Features an eclectic mix of music from Bach, PJ Harvey, Pearl McGlashan and Bandicoot to joyous gypsy bands.
Elizabeth Kirk, Julie van Renen and Liana Yew are the transcendent dancers, faultlessly powerful and yielding, lyrical and angular, quirky, cute, quicksilver, compelling - and immeasurably serene.
Dewey discovers a unifying force that gives the work's vocabulary a riveting cohesion and meaning beyond but encompassing the religious iconography.
