Tempo Dance Festival offers free theatre space and technical support to artists, together with marketing support, modelling of best business practice, seed money for emerging artists and advice on ways dance artists can improve their own business approach. Tempo also gives support to artists applying for funding by sharing the business and mentoring skills of its staff and offering advice on writing funding applications. Obtaining a slot in the festival programme is the result of a competitive evaluation process and a mark of prestige to funders and supporters.
Tempo caters for both established and emerging dance artists, offering shared programmes that present a collection of short works by a variety of artists or resources to showcase longer, more developed works on their own. The move to Q theatre this year will underscore these opportunities with access to two performance spaces under one roof at Q Theatre on Queen Street in Downtown Auckland.
The festival has always been proud of its dedication to educating young dancers and choreographers by giving them opportunities to hone their craft in a professional theatre setting. Tempo has created a “Poutama” – a ladder of educational progression for dancers beginning with children as young as 4 years old, moving through high school students to tertiary dance students and emerging professional dancers and choreographers.
The talents of hundreds of emerging artists have been showcased in the Kids’ Show, the Teen show, Tertiary Colours, Fresh Cuts and Prime Cuts. Ultimately, the festival hopes that short works from Prime Cuts or Fresh Cuts can eventually be developed into half-evening or evening-length works. Tempo also offers emerging artists mentoring support through a designated critical feedback process that aims to encourage both artistic and professional development.
