Tempo's Prime Cuts programme supports established New Zealand dance artists in a stunning season of cutting edge dance that expresses both passion and innovation. A festival favourite, this year's programme includes new and recent works featuring Cat Ruka, Mia Mason, Alex Leonhartsberger, Sarah Foster-Sproull and Francis Christeller.
Cat Ruka's work New Treaty Militia explores the relations of power between Maori and Pakeha and examines how the Treaty of Waitangi has shaped social contexts and constructions of identity.
A new work by Mia Mason features dancers Sarah Foster-Sproull and award winner, Alex Leonhartsberger. Sarah Foster-Sproull has set her quirky Tragic Best on the New Zealand School of Dance and Francis Christeller performs There There excerpt, a solo work choreographed by Antje Pfundtner which plays on ideas of myths and fairytales and how a solo artist can construct a world around them during a performance.
Five very different worlds are evoked by the beautifully crafted dance works which comprise Prime Cuts … the collection provides richly satisfying viewing.

Cat Ruka is the linchpin in this second half, and hers is an extraordinary performance.

…a wondrous evening with touching, humorous and sensual dance theatre.
