Hullapolloi
Footnote Dance, Kate McIntosh and Jo Randerson

Hullapolloi is a disturbing stab at the political dynamics of a group; a test of what is known, what is successful and what is normal through competitive urges and comforting rituals.

And it is also the name of a captivating new work created by two of New Zealand’s most sought-after performing artists Jo Randerson and Kate McItosh in as exciting new collaboration with Footnote Dance.

Footnote Dance presents the 2011 season of Footnote Forte, a programme that showcases the cream of dance choreography performed by New Zealand’s premier dance company. The programme furthers the Footnote mission to keep redefining the boundaries of dance in New Zealand, this time by adding the dramatic flourishes by one of this country’s most acclaimed playwrights in Jo Randerson, and the bombastic physicality of Kate McIntosh.

“Together, Jo and Kate have produced very strong and unexpected collaborative work,” says Footnote director Deirdre Tarrant. “There’s an element of surprise and off-the-wall unexpected choreography in the work.

“Certainly the product of their outrageous minds has been a challenge for our dancers to get their heads around so it bodes well for a series of dance works which will be captivating, groundbreaking and simply unmissable.”

Hullapolloi tackles issues of consumerism and materialism and challenges the sense that avarice has taken over. “We live in an increasingly public world yet spend far less time in public as people,” says Deirdre.

“Hullapolloi explores those pertinent issues and aims to put the human back into humanity.”

… captivating, groundbreaking and simply unmissable.

…Together, Jo and Kate have produced a very strong and unexpected collaborative work.

…The programme furthers the Footnote mission to keep redefining the boundaries of dance in New Zealand.
