Honouring
Dorothea Ashbridge
This year, Tempo is celebrating the life and career of ballet dancer and teacher Dorothea Ashbridge at the Honouring a Dancer event. After dancing as a soloist with the Royal Ballet and Sadlers Wells, Dorothea moved to New Zealand in 1967 where she became prominent as a ballet teacher in Auckland.
Dorothea choreographed for popular TV series C'mon during the 1960s, bringing pop-style go-go dancing into living rooms across New Zealand. She worked as ballet mistress with Limbs Dance Company for 12 years and taught at the Royal NZ Ballet, Unitec and the NZ School of Dance in Wellington.
Her teaching influence has shaped some of the country’s top dance talent, including Douglas Wright, Taiaroa Royal, Shona McCullagh and many more.
